Industry

Located on the bustling I-96 corridor, the Howell area is at the hub of the vast market complex of Detroit, Lansing, Grand Rapids, Ann Arbor and Flint. It is an ideal site for manufacturers of automotive components and consumer products as well as for warehousing and distribution facilities.

The Howell Area Chamber of Commerce strongly supports local industry through its Livingston Manufacturers Network, SafetyNet, Drug-Free Workplace and education initiatives. The Livingston County Workforce Development Council helps ensure a well-trained, competitive and readily-available workforce.

Along with easy access to M-59, I-96 and US 23, Howell and surrounding townships offer water and sewer, emergency services, a modern airport and rail lines. Dozens of industries have made major investments in the Howell community, including extensive foreign investments. The result is the comfort of city advantages with all the charm of small-town living.

Howell’s proximity to three major transportation arteries and convenient rail shipping provides fast routing to major industrial centers. The Livingston County Airport, located in Howell, provides easy access to corporate jets and freight services. An expansion of the facility was completed in late 2006, adding a 5,000-foot-long runway, new hangars and taxiways and an instrument landing system for safer approaches in bad weather.

The area’s Livingston Regional Michigan Technical Education Center (M-TEC) offers training in electricity, tool and die, machine maintenance, information technology, building trades and other high skill occupations. Classes are designed to meet the needs of area employers and their employees, allowing students to enroll in short courses that meet particular training needs and attend classes at a time conducive with work schedules. M-TEC is run by Mott Community College.

Pepsi-Cola Bottling Group, Hatch Stamping, Citizens Insurance Company, International Paper, Chem-Trend, Alpha Technology, Ogihara America Corporation, MISA Metal Blanking, Blue Water Automotive Systems Inc., Key Plastics and Diversified Machine are some of the larger corporations located in Howell. Dozens of Tier I and Tier II automotive suppliers have selected this area for its easy access to nearby manufacturing facilities of the Big Three and foreign automakers.
