Throughout public areas in the City of Howell, flower beds enliven the landscape,  compliments of the Howell Beautification Committee. The committee functions behind the scenes, often without much recognition, and yet the members of the committee say they  wouldn’t want it any other way. This tireless group of volunteers works to beautify the city, both through its own work and by encouraging homeowners and businesses to improve their surroundings.

The Beautification Committee presents Blue Ribbon Awards to outstanding gardens, both business and residential. The Blue Ribbon Award has existed for over 20 years and has enjoyed a very favorable reception in the community. Residents and businesses exhibiting good maintenance, restoration, balance in their use of plantings and general good appearance are singled out each week during an eight-week period.

The committee plants and maintains several public areas throughout Howell, including the upkeep of the Veteran’s Monument at the Livingston County Courthouse, all of the flowers along State Street and the gardens at the Howell Area Chamber of Commerce. Scott Hable from the City of Howell Parks & Cemetery department provides assistance in the beautification efforts by maintaining the Downtown Development Authority plantings.

The committee is chaired by Phil D’Annunzio and current members are Deb Bozin, Morrie Coles, Ed Doane, Phyllis Douglas, Martha Hubbel, John Hubbel, Carla Jowkar, Pat Manor, Dr. Louis (Pat) May, Roberta Schultz, Linda Seifried, Roy Seifried, C.R. Shelton, Lou VanCuyl, Melissa Wrona and Summer Wrona.

Throughout the growing season, the group meets at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday mornings at the Howell Area Chamber of Commerce and welcomes new members.
