  • From the desk of the President...

    “This community is magic.”

This was said to me by a delighted woman who came to see the Budweiser Clydesdales during the team’s visit to downtown Howell on Father’s Day.

    Pretty powerful words.

But as the sun shone on the magnificent horses, with hundreds of people snapping photos, adjacent to a bustling Farmers’ Market against a backdrop of the historic downtown I knew exactly what she meant.

Good things happen here. There is a synergy in this community that takes advantage of opportunities, magnifies them and makes them memorable. Even during the difficult times we’re going through now.

It was the experience of the Clydesdale team in the 2007 Fantasy of Lights—great parade, cheering crowd, beautiful downtown, efficient organization—that spurred Budweiser to call the chamber in May of this year to ask “if we’d mind” if the world-renowned team came downtown again. They wanted to spend more time with the community. Would Father’s Day work?

Who would have predicted that in 2009 we would celebrate the 25th year of the Michigan Challenge Balloonfest, complete with fireworks and over a hundred thousand guests? One pilot’s idea in the mid-80s was embraced by the chamber and volunteers to create an event that has put Howell “on the map.”

Over $30,000 was raised for cancer research because one retailer had a small idea that, when shared with others, blossomed into the town-wide Pink Party on a Thursday night in June.

Thousands come to the Amphitheater on summer Friday nights to enjoy the Livingston Arts Council’s Concerts at the Courthouse.

Earlier this year, the venerable Howell Jaycees, struggling with lower membership, approached the City of Howell to take over the reins of the beloved Melon Festival. Dozens of volunteers quickly stepped up. The 50th Howell Melon Festival will take place August 14, 15 and 16.

In addition, there are lots of little things that make a difference. During balloonfest weekend, a Livingston County EMT told me that he and his partner picked up an elderly lady at Howell Care Center to transport her to Saint Joseph Mercy Livingston Hospital. It was Saturday night, around the time of the mass balloon launch.

“I’m so sad,” the woman said. When asked why, she explained that every year she saw the balloons. “This year, I just won’t be able to see them.”  The two EMTs exchanged a glance. They drove the ambulance to a spot with a good view of the fifty balloons taking to the sky; turned the ambulance around and opened the back door.

Their passenger didn’t miss the balloons this year.

This is a community that knows what’s important and gets things done. There’s a passion here, a sense of community and the knowledge that for us to succeed we need to work together: government, chamber, schools, business and building owners, arts organizations, residents and volunteers.

Let’s celebrate that. This passion and “sense of place” serves us well now and will serve us even more in the better days that are coming.

  • Summer in the City Business After Hours

Celebrate the summer season in beautiful downtown Howell at a Summer in the City Business After Hours, hosted by Cobb-Hall Insurance and John S. Lobur, P.C. The event takes place Tuesday, August 18 from 4 to 7 p.m. in the courtyard at 223 W. Grand River Avenue in the heart of downtown Howell.

Chamber members and guests are invited to network and enjoy live music, hors d’oeuvres and refreshments outdoors, centered around the fountain and floral displays in the courtyard facing Grand River Avenue.

“This event is a great opportunity for chamber members to meet and network with other business associates in a relaxed environment. Stop by after work and enjoy the refreshments and beautiful weather,” said Pat Convery, chamber president.

There is no charge to attend. A rain date is planned for Thursday, August 20. If needed, an email will be sent out to inform the change of date.

  • Safety fundamentals at 3-day seminar

SafetyNet and the Howell Area Chamber of Commerce Foundation will host a Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Act (MIOSHA) safety and health seminar series August 6, 13 and 20 from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The General Industry 10-Hour+ (Fundamentals of Safety and Health) seminar is held in cooperation with the Michigan Department of Labor & Economic Growth and the Consultation Education & Training (CET) division of MIOSHA. The three-day event is designed to address the fundamentals of safety and health in the workplace, including inspections and citations, elements of a comprehensive safety and health system, record keeping, accident investigations, hazard recognition, machine guarding, industrial hygiene and more. Participants will receive a MIOSHA GI 10-Hour+ card upon successful completion of the class.

This course is a MIOSHA Training Institute (MTI) Level 1 course. Certification/Maintenance Points available.

  • Bang up weekend at Michigan Challenge Balloonfest

One might describe the silver anniversary of the Michigan Challenge balloonfest as a celebration of colorful balloons and flashing fireworks; but the real spark at the event is the people who make it happen for this community.

“The silver anniversary of the Michigan Challenge certainly did sparkle,” said Chairman Trevor Brooks, The UPS Store. “From the incredible fireworks show to the record crowds, the 25th year was spectacular. Through a lot of hard work and dedication from an incredible group of volunteers, this festival just keeps getting better. • Budweiser Clydesdales visit Howell's Sunday Farmers' Market

The world-famous Budweiser Clydesdales recently visited the Howell Sunday Farmers' Market and downtown Howell. The special event took place on Father’s Day, Sunday, June 21.

The Budweiser Clydesdales were available for complimentary photos, courtesy of M & M Distributors, Inc., and the public was welcome to view the custom-designed tractor-trailers, aboard which the horses travel in style.

A full team of horses from Anheuser-Busch made the visit to Howell. For event appearances, eight horses are hitched to the famous red, white and gold 1903 Studebaker-built beer wagon. The Budweiser Clydesdales stand 18 hands high, or about six feet, at the shoulder when they are fully mature and weigh approximately 2,000 pounds. They are often called “gentle giants,” because of their gentle temperament which is important when traveling some 100,000 miles and meeting millions of people each year.

Prior to this special visit, the Budweiser Clydesdales’ last appearance in Howell was during the 2007 Fantasy of Lights Parade, hosted by the Howell Area Chamber of Commerce Foundation.

According to Howell Area Chamber of Commerce President Pat Convery, the chamber was contacted by representatives, offering the opportunity. “They enjoyed this community and the warm welcome they received at the parade, so they were eager to return, spend more time with visitors and allow them to get a closer look at the team,” said Convery.

“The Farmers’ Market in downtown Howell is always a very festive and family-oriented event, and this visit from the Budweiser Clydesdale added a level of excitement for market-goers, shoppers, local residents and guests from near and far, further showcasing our beautiful downtown and all the area has to offer,” Convery said.

Howell’s Sunday Farmers’ Market is hosted by the chamber in partnership with the City of Howell Downtown Development Authority. Its major sponsor is First National Bank and the media sponsor is the Livingston County Daily Press & Argus.

Located on State Street and Clinton Street, adjacent to the historic Livingston County Courthouse in the heart of downtown Howell, the market runs every Sunday from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. from May through the end of October. The market showcases over 70 local growers, agricultural producers, artisans and crafts-people.

For more information on the Farmers’ Market, contact the chamber at 517.546.3920 or chamber@howell.org.

  • Leadership Livingston invites applicants

Leadership Livingston is now accepting applications for the 2009-2010 class. Individuals interested in ensuring the quality of Livingston County’s social and economic future are encouraged to apply. Area businesses, public and private agencies, civic and other organizations are asked to identify and support a candidate. Individuals also may nominate themselves.

The nine-month program begins in September and meets once a month at various locations throughout the county. Participants have an opportunity to increase their knowledge of all of the services, programs and organizations which are vital to the existence of the county. Additionally, participants expand their leadership skills through identification of leadership styles, conflict management and completing a community-based project.

The program first began in 1992 and is a joint effort of the Howell and Brighton chambers of commerce and Cleary University. Leadership Livingston is not a training program, but is modeled after similar leadership development programs operating successfully across the country designed to bring together individuals with diverse backgrounds and experience.

Graduates of the 2009 class stated that their interaction with media, government officials and local business and community leaders greatly surpassed their expectations of the program and gave them valuable insight into the opportunities and challenges facing the county.

Cleary University sponsors this community program and is offering tuition grants to applicants who need financial assistance. For more information visit leadershiplivingston.com or contact Janet Filip at jfilip@cleary.edu to request an application.
