Shine the Light campaign remembers victims of domestic violence

lac-Shine-Light-ICON-SQUARE-2013-272x300LACASA Center of Livingston County launches a new Shine the Light campaign this October in remembrance of domestic violence victims and in honor of survivors’ courage.

Area businesses and residents are invited to shine purple lights in store windows and porch lights. Purple string lights and individual bulbs are available at LACASA, as well as cause posters with the message: Domestic Violence Has No Place in Our Community.

The initiative is part of Purple Light Nights®, a national movement held during October, National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. LACASA is the first organization in Michigan to adopt this program.

“We are excited about the response this new campaign is receiving from the community,” said Nicole Matthews-Creech, LACASA community education director.

“Supporters are eager to take the shame out of domestic violence by illuminating purple lights that signify hope and courage,” Creech said.

The campaign sends a message, according to Creech. “It shows abusers that we will not tolerate violent behavior. It shows survivors that we honor their strength. And, for those still living with abuse, it shows that support and help are available.”

Each year, LACASA provides shelter, counseling, legal advocacy and critical resources for victims and survivors of child abuse, domestic violence and sexual assault from Livingston County.

“We will have purple lights on display during our candlelight vigil this year,” said Creech. LACASA’s 17th Annual Domestic Violence Candlelight Vigil and processional walk will be held Tuesday, Oct. 8, in the downtown courtyard of Howell’s historic county courthouse.

“There is power in numbers” Creech said. “We look forward to seeing the county illuminated in purple, the national domestic violence cause color.”

Lights are available at LACASA for a nominal donation. Campaign posters will accompany light purchases at no charge and may be hung in windows or on front doors of homes and businesses.
