St. Joseph Mercy Livingston welcomes new president

Saint Joseph Mercy Health System (SJMHS) today announced that John O’Malley, MSA, MBA, FACHE will serve as the new president of St. Joseph Mercy Livingston located in Howell, Mich.  This appointment is effective Sept. 12, 2016.


O’ Malley will lead day-to-day operations of both the hospital and St. Joseph Mercy Brighton health center, leading the expansion projects at both campuses and serving as executive liaison within the community.  He will report to Dave Brooks, president of St. Joseph Mercy Ann Arbor and Livingston hospitals.

St. Joe’s health facilities in Livingston County are currently undergoing a $41 million renovation to upgrade St. Joseph Mercy Livingston hospital and develop a unique short stay center for overnight stays at St. Joseph Mercy Brighton.

Previously, O’Malley served as CEO of Select Specialty Hospital, located within St. Joseph Mercy Ann Arbor.  From 2011-2015, he led Select’s 36-bed hospital specializing in the care of critically ill or post-ICU patients requiring long-term acute services.  In January 2015, O’Malley became a regional executive for Select leading both the Ann Arbor facility along with multiple other hospitals throughout the Midwest.

Dedicated to growth through improved performance, he has successfully recruited physicians and improved referrals as a direct result of increased hospital quality and patient satisfaction.

Before joining Select Specialty Hospital, he was an operations leader at St. John Providence Health System from 1984 -2010, and served as its regional vice president of Operations, Business Development and Service Lines. He began his career as a consultant with Arthur Anderson in San Francisco.

O’Malley earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration from Western Michigan University, his master’s degree in health administration from Central Michigan University and his MBA from Wayne State University. He lives in Clarkston with his wife and four children.

This announcement concludes a full search process that involved input from Saint Joseph Mercy Health System’s local board members, executive management, physician and nursing leadership and representatives from SJMHS’s parent company, Trinity Health.

As the only full service hospital in the county, St. Joseph Mercy Livingston has a medical staff of more than 300 providing on-site specialty services, a 24-hour emergency room, advanced stroke care, and seamless access to the system’s tertiary services at St. Joseph Mercy Ann Arbor when needed.
