Vaupel calls for transparency from drug manufacturers

State Rep. Hank Vaupel today delivered testimony before the House Health Policy Committee on a bill he introduced to make prescription drug pricing more transparent.

Vaupel, who chairs the committee, said prescription drugs make up a large part of the increasing cost of health care in Michigan. The goal of his measure is to reveal the true costs behind manufacturing them.

Under this legislation, prescription drug manufacturers would be required to report cost factors to the state Department of Health and Human Services for any drug with an annual cost of $10,000 or more.

“People shouldn’t have to ration their health care in order to afford critical medications,” said Vaupel, of Fowlerville.

The measure now waits to be considered by the committee.
