Volunteers, businesses and Top 10 Status celebrated at downtown Howell awards

Downtown Video promo picThe Howell chamber’s own Kim Esper was among the award winners at the recent Downtown Howell Awards event. Business leaders, volunteers, Howell Public School representatives and other stakeholders celebrated Howell Main Street DDA’s year of successes. The event included a special presentation from the Governor’s office and Michigan Main Street Center, honoring Howell Main Street’s designation as a Top 10 Downtown in the country, as well as 10 years of positive downtown growth.

To further celebrate the Top 10 downtown status, a special video was unveiled which highlighted downtown events, dining, shopping, and all that makes the Howell community a great place to live, work, play, and stay.

Volunteers were recognized and thanks for sharing their time and passion for the community, with four individuals given special recognition for going above and beyond in their roles as leaders and champions in the downtown.

Howell Chamber of Commerce’s Kim Esper was named the 2016 Mighty MainStreeter Award winner.

Sarah Hoffman of the Howell Interact Club received the first-ever downtown Howell Youth Volunteer of the Year Award.

Former Board President Eric Conn was recognized as the Downtown Hero for dedicating over eight years of volunteer service to the Main Street DDA.

Promotions Member Julie Hill-Lin was awarded the honor of the evening, and named the 2016 Volunteer of the Year for her enthusiasm and dedication to activities downtown including the Lunar New Year Festival and Howell Art Project.

Also recognized were property owners who demonstrated significant investments in the downtown and a commitment to preserving their historic buildings. Winners of these prestigious awards were: Firewood Grill for its interior renovation; Work Skills for the exterior rehabilitation & restoration; Howell Carnegie District Library received an award for preservation stewardship.

“The Applause Awards celebration was a demonstration of the collaboration that takes place in our Howell community, and the collaboration that it takes to build community support and a vibrant downtown,” said Howell Main Street DDA Director Cathleen Edgerly. “We were proud to share the evening with so many of our stakeholders while honoring fantastic volunteers and businesses in the district.”

Howell Main Street will find out if they are a Great American Main Street Award winner in May at the National Main Street Conference in Milwaukee. The Applause Awards and annual Volunteer program is generously sponsored by ARC Engineering Solutions, a national robotic engineering firm, located in downtown Howell.
