Ed Doane, 1998 Citizen of the Year, dies at 101

bilde[1]Ed Doane, 101, the 1998 Howell Citizen of the Year, died Saturday in Mecosta.

After more than 35 years in Howell, Doane moved to the northern Michigan town in January to be near his daughter and her family.

Doane was a founder of the Howell Beautification Committee, as well as an active member of First United Methodist Church of Howell. He was also awarded a life membership to the Howell Area Chamber of Commerce in recognition of his dedication to community service.

“He was a true gentleman and an inspiration,” said Pat Convery, president of the Howell Area Chamber of Commerce. “He was active in our Beautification Committee for years. Although he lived to be 101, to us, he died too soon.”

A memorial service is set for noon on Thursday, June 13, at First United Methodist Church, 1230 Bower St. in Howell. Memorial contributions can be made to the church in lieu of flowers.
